They are Going to Think I'm Crazy

Part of the stigma surrounding counseling is the thought that “the counselor is going to think I’m crazy”. Wrong!

Counselors are caregivers.

They want people to feel better. They have compassion for the broken hearted and wounded. And they truly understand that most often there is an origin to peoples’ problems—problems that were likely beyond their control.

Counselors are human.

They are not immune to heartache. They are not immune to uncontrollable events. They are not immune to trauma. They are not immune mental illness. Because we live in an imperfect, broken world we all face difficulties and tragedies. By the way, counselors need counselors. There is value in having a sounding board, a confidant, and someone on the outside that can give a new perspective.

Counselors understand uncontrollable unfortunate events.

Counselors want people to understand that often it is the circumstances in a person’s life that are crazy, uncontrollable, and/or unbearable for a person to carry alone.

Counselors help you distinguish between healthy and unhealthy behaviors.

When events happen, people react in different ways. Sometimes there’s not a right or wrong reaction, decisions are made based upon a person’s emotional maturity. People often, even emotionally mature people, make decisions that negatively affect their relationships. Counselors can help clients see different perspectives, help them determine if they acted at the appropriate emotional maturity stage, and sort through confusing emotions revolving around specific events or habitual behaviors.

Final Thoughts

What the counselors at Harvest Counseling and Wellness want people to know, is that we are all humans living in an imperfect world—a broken world, things happen to all of us and none of us are immune to the human experience. So it’s more than okay—and perfectly normal for people to need and seek counsel regarding the crazy things that happen in life.
