Therapy works, but it doesn’t work if the client isn’t committed to the healing journey. High expectations are often put on therapists to heal people, but the reality of it is that therapists aren’t healers. Clients have to commit to grow, learn, take constructive criticism, and be willing to consider other perspectives.
When you seek counseling and desire long-lasting results, consider implementing some of these tools to progress and speed up your healing journey:
reading books suggested by your therapist
journaling
mindfulness
exercise
prayer & meditation
healthy relationships
spiritual life
nutrition
sleep
organizing/cleaning your spaces
good hygiene
hobbies
participating in daily family activities/routines
Things that slow down the healing process
staying in unhealthy relationships
not sharing feelings and needs with those you are close to
not doing homework, reading, or practicing skills learned or given during therapy sessions
not getting your body moving
keeping secrets—from spouse, parents, and therapist
continuing problematic behaviors
spending too much time on social media
binge watching television
isolating from loved ones
Final Thoughts
A life of depression, anxiety, codependency, or just being in a rut can take a toll on a person mentally, spiritually, and physically. So it’s important that when you are ready to heal that you incorporate healthy activities and routines in each of these areas: mentally, spiritually, socially (healthy relationships) and physically. In some cases, your therapist may suggest visiting a psychiatrist to explore possible medical interventions. Therapists do not prescribe medications, so a psychiatrist can help in this area. (See our recommendation for a psychiatrist in the DFW area here.)
