What is Somatic Experiencing?

Somatic Experiencing (SE) Therapy, developed by Dr. Peter Levine, is a body-centered therapeutic approach designed to address trauma and chronic stress. It is based on the idea that trauma resides not only in the mind but also in the body, where it can manifest as physical tension, dysregulated emotions, or persistent fight, flight, or freeze responses. SE focuses on releasing this stored trauma by working with the body’s natural capacity to self-regulate and heal.

SE therapy emphasizes the role of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in trauma. When a person experiences a threat, the ANS activates to respond appropriately. However, if the threat is overwhelming or unresolved, the energy mobilized by the body may remain "trapped," leading to symptoms such as hypervigilance, anxiety, or dissociation. SE helps clients gently release this trapped energy and return to a state of balance.

Unlike traditional talk therapies, SE emphasizes awareness of bodily sensations as a gateway to healing. Sessions typically involve the therapist guiding the client to notice and track their physical sensations, emotions, and movements in a safe and controlled environment. By slowing down and observing these experiences, the client learns to “renegotiate” rather than relive their trauma, allowing the nervous system to complete its natural stress-response cycle.

Why Somatic Experiencing Therapy?

SE therapy is particularly effective for individuals who have experienced physical or emotional trauma, including accidents, abuse, or chronic stress. It has been shown to reduce symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), improve emotional regulation, and enhance resilience.

By reconnecting individuals with their bodily wisdom and innate capacity for healing, Somatic Experiencing fosters a deeper sense of safety, empowerment, and well-being. It offers a holistic path to resolving trauma and restoring the body’s natural equilibrium.
